The Normans

At the time of the Norman Conquest Wimbledon was part of the Manor of Mortlake or "Mortelage" owned by the Archbishop of Canterbury. After the Battle of Hastings, Wimbledon will have suffered badly as Duke William of Normandy devasted the country in a wide arc to the west of London. An entry in the Domesday book states "The whole manor (of Mortlake) in the time of King Edward (The Confessor) was worth £32 and afterwards £10."
